How do I get iTunes to automatically update the library?

How do I get iTunes to automatically update the library? when I add a new song to the folder which I have set *** my "media location folder"?How do I get iTunes to automatically update the library?
The best answer is that you should not add a new song to the folder. It's actually much easier to drag the song (or songs, or even folder containing all the songs) into iTunes. It should update the library, of course, but with the right settings it will move the music into appropriate folders for you.

To start, make sure that you consolidate your library. This should be under File (might be iTunes on a Mac) %26gt; Library %26gt; Organize Library... . Consolidate, and if you wish and haven't, Upgrade to iTunes Media organization.

Edit (again, may be under iTunes or another menu on a Mac) %26gt; Advanced. Double check your iTunes Media Folder (I once had an issue in iPod/iTunes tech support where someone called in because none of her settings would stay, including this one) then make sure Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder are both checked.

If you have all of these settings, then you can just open iTunes then drag the files onto it. It will do everything else for you. I have found that on occasion iTunes will realize there is a song in its media folder that it can add to the library and do it automatically (as far as I've found, there is no real setting for it) however it's not reliable. It has also done so when consolidating the library, or setting the folder path again, though I don't know if it will with the recent version of iTunes. It's been nearly a year since I left Apple.

I would not recommend downloading straight into the media folder, but instead a desktop or temporary folder and add them as I stated above. If you are downloading while away from home and are storing it on an external drive, make sure it's in a separate folder to add. It could save you a lot of headache and possible heartache. I had to troubleshoot a lot of 'lost music' calls. Apple's recommendation is that you also have a backup of all your music. No software is perfect, no matter what Apple tries to tell you.
