Collis P. Huntington, one of the Big Four, was the Western side of the transcontinental railroad. He later incorporated the Central Pacific into the Octopus, itself (Southern Pacific). At the time, SP had a virtual monopoly on rail transportation in California, and Huntington soon extended SP all the way to New Orleans. He was one of the wealthiest men in America in a time when there was no income tax.
