I bought a signature mini 250gb external hard drive yesterday. However, all it seems to be doing is a back up. I'm trying to move all my itunes library onto it and remove my library from my computer to free up space. How do I do this? I'm a little worried it's only for back up and can't be used like that. How to move my itunes library onto external hard drive?
If all of your songs are in one folder you should be able to drag and drop it onto the drive. If you have purchased songs from iTunes that are DRM protected you might have issues putting them on the drive. I recommend that you burn all of your DRM protected music onto cd-r's to back them up and then you can rip them back onto your computer and not have the DRM protection anymore. This should allow you to move the once protected files to the new drive.
Also if you need to play your music from the drive you should be able to drag the folder right into the iTunes menu thing and iTunes should load all the songs for you and change the directories automatically. How to move my itunes library onto external hard drive?
I don't know for sure, but I'm fairly certain iTunes has a very specific disk location it uses, and cannot be made to point to another spot.
However, something you could try is after copying everything over (it sounds like it's already copied over, if you've done a backup, and if not, look for the iTunes Music folder and copy it over), look in the iTunes prefs for the checkbox options relating to keeping your iTunes Music Folder Organized and Copy Files to iTunes Music Folder and make sure both are not selected. Move your previous iTunes Music folder and iTunes Library database file to the trash/recycle bin (with iTunes closed! And don't empty the trash/recycle bin yet, since I don't know if this will solve your problem and you may have to move it back to avoid losing your tunes!). When you open iTunes, hopefully your library will be empty. You should be able to drag all your music back in from the other harddive, or maybe find an option to look for mp3s and such on your disks.
Hope this helps.
